These glass houses were made in Murano, Italy, and decorated the Airbnb where we stayed while visiting. Murano was Europe’s major center for luxury glass beginning in the 13th century and peaking in popularity in the 15th and 16th centuries. Murano’s proximity to Syria and Egypt helped glassmakers gain additional skills from more advanced glassmakers. Because of the high heat and fire used to make glass, factories often caught fire and had the potential to cause mass destruction. Murano proved to be an ideal location for the industry as it was a small island and fire damage could be contained. As glassmaking talent spread through Europe, Murano became less important. There was a revival that began in the 1920s that helped Murano become a hotspot for the craft and tourists. If you make it to Venice, you should definitely visit Murano and purchase some Venetian glass to bring home.
