This sculpture depicts the heartwrenching tale of Arria and Paetus. Condemed by the king to kill himself due to his role in an unsuccessful rebellion, Paetus labored over his sentence but found himself unable to go through with it. His faithful wife Arria, who can't bear the thought of life without him, takes it upon herself in an act of passion to stab herself, she then looks to her husband and tells him "the wound which I have made gives me no pain; but it is that which you will make, Poetus, that pains me". This visually sorrowing sculpture elecits painful emotions by itself, but bears its true beauty when the full story is known. This sculpture is currently at the Louvre in Paris.
